COMMON QUESTIONS

It can be stressful to find the right contractor to take care of the roof that you live under. Let’s face it, there are a large number of roofing contractors to choose from in the Great Edmonton area, from huge roofing companies who subcontract most of their jobs out to handyman type roofer with everything in their truck.

Couple of important guidelines can help you narrow down the contractors you’ve had in your mind.

Is the roofing contractor licensed and insured?

Does it have Workers Compensation Coverage?

It is critical that you hire the roofing contractor who’s licensed to work on your roof.  For your protection, only those contractors who're properly insured are accountable for any unforeseen situations that may occur while they are on duty. WCB Coverage is also very important because it also protects you, the consumer, if someone is hurt on your property.  D Masters Roofing is fully licensed insured for liability up to $2,000,000. Our WCB account number can always be found on the estimate we provide and the WCB clearance letter can be provided if requested.

Do they have a professional team?

Not only the person who does your estimate has to verify his/her professionalism, but also of the actual crews who will work on your roof. If possible, ask the roofing contractors if you can stop by to verify if they have organized job sites and standardized working flow.  D Masters Roofing usually have more than one job sites in completion during busy summer time, as long as you are not interrupting our crews on site and the homeowner, we are more than happy to have you visit our sites.

Does the company give you a written estimate and contract?

You should be given a detailed estimate of all of the job specifications including products being used (Drip edge, types of underlayment, they way of the roof valley is installed, starters, shingles, vents ridge and hip), service they provide (material delivery, detailed roof system installation, job site cleaning, gutter cleaning and dumping)and pricing for your roofing project. Once you have agreed to go ahead with the project, a written and signed contract is very important to protect you.

Ask the contractor who is going to do the work on your job, their employees or a sub-contractor?

You should be given a detailed estimate of all of the job specifications including products being used (Drip edge, types of underlayment, they way of the roof valley is installed, starters, shingles, vents ridge and hip), service they provide (material delivery, detailed roof system installation, job site cleaning, gutter cleaning and dumping)and pricing for your roofing project. Clarify the warranties that apply to your job.

There are workmanship warranties which are provided by the contractor. This warranty covers the installation. There will also be a material warranty which is offered by the manufacturer of the products and those warranties vary depending on the products being installed. D Masters Roofing provides the best 15 or 10 year workmanship warranty depending on what type of shingles you would like to have your roof installed.

Dealing with D Masters Roofing, means dealing with the owners from the beginning to completion of the project instead of talking with salesman, office manager, crew leader and fund collector… We file your project with time stamped photos that demonstrate our plan from day one when we measure your roof. Photos and videos will be taken all through our re-roofing process. Most importantly, the final report will be sent out to you so you know how we completed your roof with a peace of mind. The photos we took on and off your roof is your asset!

This is important to understand that only the company you sign the contract with will be responsible for the workmanship. Our organization only does the job we estimate ourselves, and all our jobs are done by our experienced employees.

Let’s get into the project core of our entire process - how we manage our job sites and install your new roof:

1.

Park our company owned dump trailer (s) on the tires to your driveway/lawn (vs third party rental Dumpster) to protect your property.

2.

Tarp around your property, including your deck, flower bed, side yard etc., to have them protected from nails and debris. Cover your basement window wells with plywood.

3.

Remove your old roof system and inspect the roof decking conditions. Repair the damaged sheathing with 26 gauge metal flashing or plywood depending on the situations.

4.

Install the anti rust paint Drip Edges all around your eaves.

5.

Install 44 inch wide self-adhesive SBS based Ice and Water shield membrane to protect your eave and roof valley.

6.

Install shingle manufacture recommended synthetic underlayment with Stinger Cap Staples to seal the penetration by the staples itself (best practice in steep roof underlay application).

7.

Install anti rust paint W metal flashing in your roof valley area to have a permanent protection of the most vulnerable area.

8.

Seal the valley flashing edge with another layer of Ice and Water shield again! This practice prevents a single drip of water to penetrate through your roof!

9.

Install shingle manufacturer recommended starters.

10.

Design the proper vent positions based on the size, facing and slope of your roof.

Check out if the other estimates you received met our standards so far from step 1-10, which can usually cheap out by some contractors. So, how about your shingles? In fact, we’ve done 80% of our work on the roof. This percentage sets D Masters Roofing’s installation process apart from the other contractors.

11.

We only install well made shingles with 6 nails right on the nailing zone. Owens Corning Duration is our trusted brand that their SureNail technology only requires 4 nails to have 130 mph (or 209 km/h) wind resistant strength. D Masters roofing offers a 15 years workmanship warranty to go with this brand!

12.

Wait...how we deal with the roof openings (vents, plumbing, chimney, goose-neck, furnace/hot water tank exhaust etc)? We wrap them up at the upper and side flashing with Ice and Water again! Exposed lower flashing is fastened with industrial grade waterproof screws that will hold your vents for a Loooong time!

13.

Manufacturer recommended hip and ridge shingle is the only product we install to cap the roof.

14.

Cleaning services including your gutter, completed roof, ground, driveway and your neighbours’ yard! Magnets are used to pick loose nails on the ground. We pay your tire repair fee if it’s damaged by our roofing nails.
